Monday 23rd July

Welcome to Term Three… a special welcome to all new children and those returning from Australia.

This week all children should be setting goals for the term and then short term goals. These will be in their STUDENT PLANNERS. You may wan5t to have a look at the goals especially if your child is sitting for the Grade 8 Exam. If you have worries please contact the class teacher and arrange a time when you can sit down and talk about your concerns.

Afterschool sport will start next week… this will be a class teams competition. The sport we are covering will be Touch on the fields, Basketball on the courts, Table Tennis and Badminton in the Hall and swimming.

Can you please check that your children are wearing their correct uniform… there is plenty of new uniform in the Koro Shop.

It is great to see the children all back from holiday.

The question in the planner is ‘What is the biggest country in the world?” The best way to find the answer is to use the search engine ‘ASK JEEVES’ www.askjeeves.com and it will go straight to the answer…. Or will it? What is the question…. Is it which is the biggest country in terms of land mass, is it what is the biggest in terms of population, is it what is the biggest in terms of its economy or it could be what is the biggest in terms of the number of children under five years of age. This is a good week to start talking to your children about ‘what do we read into a question’.

It is also a good week to think about the geographical words which go around the question:

Country

Island

Continent

Or republic, state, nation, realm, kingdom, fatherland, motherland, nation state

Maybe start with a world map and try and guess which country has the biggest area, start using other tools to refine, see if you can get answers for my questions above. Have fun.
